The Treasure Hunt is on!!!!

We set a game for the kids to hunt for treasure on Aqila's 7th birthday.

1.Preparation time.

THese are the pirate swords for our little pirates~

Bunda, gave a set of tasks to the pirates.

2. Island of Pirates. We are making our Pirate hats!

And given other attires such as swords and eye patch and we are set to go hunting!

Aqila went outing to Kid's Kampung in Pasir Ris with his school yesterday. Came home all smiles with a bucket of ...fish! Alamaaak...what are we going to do with them???

He said he saw and played with gerbils, hamsters. Saw ducks roaming around the farm, got a chance to feed the fish etc.

Well i guess Kids Kmpung is an interesting place to go with family. A good alternative destination to spend our weekend at. You get tired of going to malls after sometimes right?

...That was what Aqila told me on his third day of bringing books home from school library.

"Of course she knows you silly, she was actually reminding you that you have so far... borrowed 3 books within 3 days! She just wanted to make sure you are going to read those books" i explained.

Now...I wonder where do all this sudden fondness of borrowing books come from? All this time i can hardly raise Aqila's interest to find and search interesting books at the nearby library. When he agrees to go, he would pick the same book again and again and again.

Dont get me wrong, he loves reading. Whenever i buy new books for him or borrow some books from library, he will jump up and down with joy. His eyes would lit everytime we go to bookstore. He reads stories online...he

So this is my theory. Perhaps you, Aqila, find the school library to be less intimidating, is more cozy and relax. I dont know but i guess this is one of your favourite past time during recess time, away from the noisy canteen and playground. A perfect place for you to seek solitude....just like your mom when she was in high school :-)

So...i let you do what you are doing now. I will just make sure we read the book together and return them before due date.

Puzzled over the title? Hehehe. Well they are the open strings in violin.

You see, Aqila chose this instrument over piano and now...is struggling to play the piece. Aiyoooh...son, why didnt you choose something easier to play sih? It is a challenge just to get the correct note coming out of your violin. I know, i once tried to learn to play it too.

Ya sudah...sabar dan rajin berlatih saja ya nak. Playing is one thing, playing with feeling is another thing. Sekarang just get the technique/mechanique right dulu deh, feeling will come naturally.

Attending to a sick kid is a real challenge for me. Entertaining my super-active-easily-bored sick son is ... an almost impossible task.

What did we do to kill time?
We painted. Alas...we only had red, blue, white, brown and a little left of yellow paint. So Aqila mixed the colours to get his fave colour: purple as well as green, pink, peach and light blue. Attempted but failed to produce black colour...He could only get greyish greenish yucky colour... hehehe.

Nevermind. We had fun :-)

Between Karate and Taekwondo

Dad used to train Taekwondo, whilst mom did Karate.

And now Aqila chose Silat...because he said the movements is like dancing hehehehe

It is only a couple of weeks of training, too soon to tell whether he will stick to this sport for a while. Nevermind...we just want Aqila to build up his stamina.

My New School

School new year in Singapore starts on 4 january 2011. Like thousands of new Primary 1 students on this island state, Aqila starts his new routine, new beginning, new life...(like what uncle Buble said).

This is Aqila's school, North Spring Primary.

During first week, all new P1 students have two buddies from P5 to help the new kids understand the school routine like - where the toilets are, where is the canteen, good eating habits, how to order food at canteen, what to play during recess- those kinda stuff.

These are Jael and Daniel, Aqila's buddies. They are so sweet and caring and so mature.

Buddy system is a very good concept, as it teaches P5 students to be responsible with their charge, to lead and show examples to their junior abt life in Primary school. On the othee hand, tge new P1 students will feel more at ease and relax during their first week of school as they have somebody (older but not too old) to help them around. Who started this idea ya...i wonder?

We parents can only see our kids during this time :-/

Parents...what are you waiting for?

Aaah...they are waiting to have a glimpse of their kids during recess time.

I am a bit jealous with parents in other schools as they are allowed to go to their kid's class, canteen even accompanying them while the kids are eating during this first week of school. But i understand the reason behind the prohibition, and i can accept that...with heavy heart though.

Wash your hand before and after meal...good habit must always be reinforced.

Dont forget to put dirty dishes at its respective bin, okay?

For kids with multiple allergies like Aqila, going out and eating out can be a daunting task...at least for the parents.

We went to Banana Leaf restaurant at race course rd to treat Aqila's oma opa, and the moment we stepped into the resto, Aqila started sneezing and having runny nose nonstop all at the same time. Immediate effect of pungent/strong smell of the spices the resto use for its dishes. Aqila of course did not eat get to enjoy any foods from the resto. We re not sure about the ingredients anyway. Poor baby...

So it is a simple joy that we really cherish when we found this choco bark and giant lollipop that Aqila can enjoy safely at candilicious-a candy store at Resort World Sentosa.

Let's celebrate mother's day

Mother's day should be celebrated everyday, not just on some particular dates. It is certainly nice to receive a genuine attention in the form of gifts, flowers, chocolate, a day of off duty (whoa...is there such day for a mom?), but really...mothers around the world do not need any of those. They will keep on loving their children and provide love, protection, comfort, for their children unconditionally, with or without gifts :-)

So dear Aqila, all you have to do to recognise my efforts in bringing you up is to show me that you care for me, you help me with house chores, you listen to me, you do well in school, you behave well, you show kindness towards other people, help other people in needs, you respect us...your parents, respect other people, especially mothers. Oh...and a kiss and a hug for me will be nice too :-)

Show me this every day my dear, and we shall celebrate mother's day everyday! :-D

Do you know who this guy is?

He is Richard Hammond who, together with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, co-present the hugely popular BBC tv series Top Gear.

Since Aqila is crazy about cars and love Top Gear programme so much I am so delighted to find this gem in the library today.

Aqila and his cousin Harsha and i were in Seng Kang library looking for books about cars and trains when Aqila spot this. We immediately put the book into our bag to secure it from other prey :P

The book is published by DK publishing, known for its wide-range of educational books for children. And Richard is apparently quite a successful author, specializing on books about science for kids. Interesting eh? :-)

What sort of things we can learn in this book? Well the book talks about history of car, it also explains about horsepower, making petrol, what is piston and how does it work, newton's laws of motion, what is acceleration, the science of airflow etc.

Numbing and mind-bloggling subjects? Not really because those subjects are explained creatively, with pictures, diaghrams, association and simple explanation. But yes...for young children, parents' guidance and further explanation is required, which i dont mind doing :-)

Actually...this is quite a good science book! If you like cars of course :-)

So...go visit the library or hunt for this book. I personally think it is worth to own one.

Not the End of the World

Last week i received a call from Health Promotion Board. The lady staff had arranged an appointment for Aqila to have his eyes checked at their polyclinic in Geylang. The reason for this arrangement was because Aqila
missed his annual eye-check at school. He was ill when the the doctors came to do mass eye checks to all students in his Kindergarten.

We went for the appointment yesterday. The clinic was at 3rd level, and very quiet with no other patients beside us! Good thing...because usually we have to wait for hours to get to our turn to see doctor at poly. And the test is free of chrge as it is part of the "National movement of myopia prevention"

Well...what do you know, after the test, the opthometrist said that Aqila has astigmatism and he has to wear spectacles to correct it :-/ whaaat? Oh No! Mom is so shattered to learn this.

What is astigmatism? It is a condition where the eye ball/ cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball, an oval shape instead of a sphere. Astigmatism causes lights to bounce unevenly off the surface of the oval shaped eye, thus allowing eyes to focus on more than one point in the eye. This create problem in focusing ability, causing blurry vision.

The cause of astigmatism? Unknown but can be hereditary. Well both dad and mom are wearing specs with one of us suffers from astigmatism as well :-(

Poor kid. I always thought Aqila is rather lazy when it comes to reading. Now i know one of possible reasons, maybe because the words in the book he is reading are floating blurry and double in vision. Kesian...

Okay sweetie, you need to wear spectacles. It is not the end of the world. Just promise me to eat your green and play outside more!

Aqila's teacher in Kindergarten has just got married this week. She is one of the teachers from Hanis Montessori who really has left an impression on Aqila...and me.

Teacher Seri is kind, funny, creative and very understanding especially on Aqila's condition.

We met other ex Hanis teachers as well, teacher Hanna, Farah and Fariza. You all are looking good girls :-)

To teacher Seri, congratulation on your wedding. May you and your husband are always happy and stay loving towards each other for better or worse, forever. Amin.

This is Aqila's version of our house plan. If you've been to our (new) house, you will recognise aqila's room, dining room, living room. There is the dining table there, the bookshelves next to it, dad's favourite sofa and the TV and TV console in front of it, Aqila's bed and his study tables, his toy boxes.... :-)

Up the Good Things in Your Kids' Cakes

Lets face it, kids just looove cakes and cookies.

Now i am no brainer when it comes to cooking and baking...but i know i can hide vegetables or fruits puree in my kid's cakes so that i can up his intake on vitamins and fibres.

You see...Aqila is picky when it comes to food, coupled with his multiple-allergy issues, preparing a decent yet nutritious food for him can be a daunting task for me.

How do i do it? Simple...you can do it too. All you have to do is to puree some vegetables such as carrots, zuchini, cauliflower even broccoli, and add about 1/2-1C of this puree to your cake dough. (you just gauge the amount ya). Any cake dough. Since aqila is now crazy about brownies, so I add that to brownies dough. Last stage before pouring the batter to pan and bake.

Easy? Of course. Try it and let me know the result ya?

Vintage Cars in Singapore

Balik ke masa lalu...

Bulan Agustus lalu si kecil dan ayahnya datang ke pameran mobil antik ini. Diselenggarakan oleh Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register, tentu saja acara ini menarik buat mereka yang menggilai mobil tua tapi cantik. Terbukti...dari foto2 ini. :-)

Vintage, classic, semi-classic cars....apalah namanya. Definisi classic cars (di Singapura) adalah mobil yang usianya 35 tahun ke atas (dilihat dari tanggal registrasinya).

LTA (Land Transport Authority) mengeluarkan scheme kepemilikan khusus untuk para penggemar mobil2 antik ini. Dengan scheme ini, pemilik mobil antik bisa mengendarai mobil mereka selama 28 hari per tahun. Hah...cuma boleh merayap di jalan kurang dari 1 bulan per tahun??? Well...jika kita lihat kondisi kelayakan mobil2 ini...yang mungkin sudah tidak diproduksi lagi onderdilnya...ya sudah lumayan ya hehe. Lagipula...kebanyakan mobil-mobil ini hanya akan jalan jika ada ekshibisi, parade atau yang sejenisnya dan....pergi ke bengkel! Hahaha

Okelah...silakan menikmati foto2nya ya.

Thanks to Tante Fine, bunda bisa upload video ini sekarang haha.

This is Aqila's all time favoutite movie and song. The movie it self is not for kids actually, it is about a young chap named Takumi (the movie is based on popular book in Japan) who often drifts his father's Toyota AE-86 car all the way up to Mt Akina.

Aqila and his dad love the racing scene at M. Akina...oh well...that is one of the things that is always on their mind I guess. Fast cars...exciting drifting actions...wonderful track...you get the idea.

The movie or the book made this Toyota AE-86 become very popular among drifters and cars enthusiasts. And i think it also catapult Jay Chou's career as singer/songwriter and actor.

Here is the lyrics....the song is pretty nice though sad. I love the melody.

Tentu saja...naik pesawat terbang :-)

Lihat entog hidup.
Ada cerita seru seputar entog dan bebek dan ayam. Di kampung uyutnya di Kranji, Aqila melihat ayam tua yang bulunya sudah ada-tiada, sudah jarang. Dia heboh menunjuk ayam itu sambil berseru," Bunda, look it's a duck!" (bunda tepok jidat).

Bbrp hari kemudian, dia melihat entog ini di depan rumah eyangnya di daerah Cisalak. Para orang tua berseru pada Aqila, "Nah...itu entog sejenis bebek...duck!" Aiiiih....Aqila, kasihan deh kamu!

Main catur dengan sepupu
Aqila main asal jadi, sepupunya mas Nathan main sepenuh hati. Mas Nathan ikut klub catur di sekolahnya. Ini Pembicaraan yang terdengar oleh ayah:
Aqila: .(..tek tek...pasang bidak catur sembarangan)
Nathan: "Aduh Aqila, kalau main catur yang benar dong. Jangan jalan ke situ dong, kan itu bisa dimakan!"

Ortu: tsk...tsk...tsk..
